Over the years, clinical laboratory medicine has moved away from a community-based service toward centralized, high volume, impersonal testing. Medical laboratory testing is often performed by huge corporations that have no direct ties to the communities they serve. In general, when a patient has blood drawn, or submits other types of specimens for laboratory analysis, those samples are picked up by one of the laboratory giants’ couriers, transported to a distribution center, loaded on a plane and flown to another city - often another state - and go through various routes before they are tested alongside tens of thousands of other specimens from all over the country. Among other possible problems, this can lead to long delays before clinicians are notified of results and are able to inform their patients and begin treatment.

NextWave Diagnostic Laboratories was recently created by several principals from Wilmington Pathology Associates (WPA) in response to a desire by healthcare providers for a higher level of service and accessibility within our community. WPA has provided anatomic and clinical pathology services to the medical communities of southeastern North Carolina since 1976. With the launch of NextWave, we are now able to offer an additional level of care, providing expertise in clinical laboratory medicine that the people of our communities deserve. Because many patients are now burdened with a larger portion of their healthcare insurance premiums, one of our guiding principles is to offer reasonably priced testing within our own geographic area in comparison to labs driven by Wall Street.
